The point, just like a movie trailer, is to gain visibility, gather interest, and hopefully get some more purchases!
Lulu Staff Blogger Carol Housel posted the following article back in June 2008 How to create the BEST book trailer, EVER. (seriously.) Helpful do-s and don'ts of book trailer making.

Carol gathered a lot of response from this blog post, with a ton of people posting trailers that they'd already made and sparked other to make theirs. The then posted them in the comments section.
